There’s too much on my plate.
I’m juggling a lot right now.
I have a lot of irons in the fire.

 

English gives us a lot of ways to say: I’ve taken on more than I can handle.

 

What are some idioms that show the opposite, someone with plenty of time to focus solely on one thing, and do it thoroughly and thoughtfully?

 

I’ll admit that I didn’t look through every page of Google results. However, what I did see was that, while we have many ways to describe being so busy that we’re not doing a great job, the state of being productive and efficient but not overwhelmed doesn’t really have an idiom to go with it.

 

What would you call the state of flow that leads to focused, productive work? And why do you think our language hasn’t had a need for an idiom that describes it?
